Lee Bay, Study I - Commissioned Pencil Drawing ![]() Original - pencil on paper © John Twinning 2005 & 2010 One of a series of beautiful pencil drawings, commissioned by Lee Abbey, Devon. Lee Abbey is a Christian Community and conference centre based near Lynton, North Devon. To get there you must drive through the beautiful little seaside town of Lynton and along a spindly road, which further narrows to a single track in some places. The community is situated just beyond a spectacular natural feature called the Valley of Rocks. As you enter the estate the geography of the place changes drastically, becoming more welcoming with rolling hills that are in somewhat sharp contrast to the rocky and outlandish outcrops of The Valley of Rocks. The first thing you see is three crosses up on a hill silhouetted against the West Country sky. For Christians this symbolism is self-evident. The vistas surrounding Lee Abbey are truly spectacular and on a bright and sunny day, one could almost imagine one has entered paradise. Then before you clap eyes on any of the residents or visitors you start to see sheep and cattle because the community has its own livestock and farm. I was introduced to Lee Abbey by a friend who's son in law was the centre manager. I was asked to do a number of drawings which could be turned into cards and prints These highly detailed pencil drawings feature the beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside of Lee Abbey. See also the print called "The Lone Fisher" which features a lone seagull waiting for a bite to eat whilst sitting on a rock in Lee Bay.
