St. Ives Bridge, Study IV - Full Summer (Cambridgeshire) ![]() Original - gouache on paper © John Twinning 2007 & 2010 This is Cambridgeshire's St. Ives, not the the other St. Ives which has become perhaps more prominent due to the media attention lavished on its artistic community....oh and not to mention ...... the "beautiful quality of the light". Well for my money, this St. Ives has equal merit and may very well boast just as many artists. As for its light....well it's certainly a light which is just as impressive in my book; which is why I've painted quite a few pictures of this beautiful and picturesque Cambridgeshire town over the years. St. Ives sits approximately 10 miles north West of Cambridge, just off the A14. I lived near to St. Ives for about six months or so in 1989 in a village called Elsworth (more of which elsewhere on this site). I am led to believe that this spectacular bridge was damaged during the English civil war which meant that one of the arches had to be rebuilt. Can you spot which one? Simple clue: it's a different shape to all the others. The River Great Ouse flows inexorably along with the parish church nestling in the background. More pictures of St. Ives to follow at a later date. I still exhibit work at the L'Bidi Studio gallery at nearby Abbots Ripton which has been supporting my artistic endeavours for over 20 years.
